The IPSTAR Broadband Satellite system utilizes advanced technological concepts in conjunction with a new geo-stationary satellite to provide bandwidth capacity unmatched by conventional satellite technology. The system is radically different from currently available options in that it will target the Internet, the “Last Mile” sector and the mass consumer market in the same instance.
Shin Satellite Plc., a leading satellite operator in Asia and the promoter of the IPSTAR Project, developed and commercialized both the Space Segment and the Ground System ensuring that the IPSTAR system is a cost-effective, total solution for broadband last-mile communication. Competitiveness with other existing last-mile broadband solutions (such as DSL or cable modem) is guaranteed.
The IPSTAR satellite can deliver approximately 45 Gbps of aggregate capacity, far higher than conventional satellite, allowing it to satisfy the enormous demand for broadband Internet bandwidth of millions of users - consumers, corporate customers, service providers and telecom operators alike. The key benefits of the IPSTAR system are its ability to provide an immediately available, highcapacity ground network with affordable bandwidth and end-user terminals. The system will allow for rapid deployment and flexible service locations anywhere within its extensive footprint.
The IPSTAR commercial rollout strategy is divided into First Generation (FG) and Second Generation (SG):
• IPSTAR First Generation (FG) Service: The IPSTAR New Ground System is to be used in conjunction with conventional satellites. This will allow earlier deployment and ramp up of the IPSTAR service with reduced costs compared to other existing ground technologies.
• IPSTAR Second Generation (SG) Service: The IPSTAR Ground System will be used with the new IPSTAR-1 broadband satellite. The service is expected to commence in 2004, providing coverage all over the Asia-Pacific region. This will provide a very cost effective structure compared to any other existing satellite systems.
IPSTAR is a broadband satellite designed for today and future.
